Curriculum
All subjects are taught by Christian teachers who aim to provide students with a holistic education from a Biblical perspective.
Bible:
The Bible curriculum has been designed to help children handle correctly the Word of Truth and so become thoroughly equipped for every good work, that as they grow and mature they will continue in the truths taught and truly believe.
Literacy:
Language is one of God’s gifts to mankind. Language is the indispensable tool for all thought and learning. The primary purpose of the study of English in the early years is to establish firm foundational skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing - the literacy skills essential for success in all areas of learning.
A strong emphasis is placed upon the learning of phonics in Junior School. Our use of the Letterland Program in the Prep year ensures the students are introduced to letter/sound relationships in a way that is interesting and easy to recall. (This is built upon by the use of a wide variety of Literacy resources, and Early Years teaching strategies.)
We aim to guide each individual child through the stages of language development through regular monitoring and small group guidance, so as to achieve a thorough understanding.
Numeracy:
God revealed His majesty in all the concepts of number, space, form and symmetry and in the laws that govern the existence and harmony of all things created.
Strands within the maths curriculum are: Space, Number, Measurement and Data, Reasoning and Strategies.
Maths Plus is the maths program currently used throughout Junior and Middle School. This is a commercial resource, which is closely aligned to the Curriculum and Standards Framework and ensures sequential progress. (This is built upon by the use of a wide variety of Numeracy resources, and Early Years teaching strategies.)
The Arts - Art and Music:
God created people to experience, enjoy and respond to His creation. Being made in the image of God, we also have a desire and ability to be creative in various ways. Through the Arts program, children are guided into opportunities to develop their individual gifts and talents and to learn to appreciate God’s gifts in others.
Studies of Society and Environment:
God created a world displaying diversity in culture, history, landscape, customs and lifestyle. As Australians we experience this diversity and need to be aware and accepting of other cultures and history both in Australia and around the world.
Health:
This subject enables students to see how we are fearfully and wonderfully made. It also provides our students with opportunity to develop understanding of the things that help us to keep our bodies safe, fit and healthy.
Physical Education:
The prime goal of Physical Education is to develop each child’s personal and social attitude and physical potential through physical activity. Physical education is concerned with educating children in controlling their bodies for service to God and His kingdom.
Science:
Through the study of Science children may be led to appreciate and acknowledge God as Creator and Sustainer of the universe and to know increasingly the majesty, wisdom, love and power of God and the dependence of all things upon Him.
Specialist Subjects:
Areas treated as specialist subjects change from year to year according to the gifts and training of the Junior School Staff. However these generally include: Library, Music, P.E./Sport and Information and Communication Technology.
Signed English is also a specialist area.
Woven throughout the curriculum are special programs in which the Junior School participates each year. Such programs include: Life Education Van, Jump Rope for Heart, Children’s Book Week, Special Older Persons’ Day, School Concerts, ANZAC day and Remembrance Day, Athletics Carnival, Covenant College Show, Mission Awareness, Lunchtime Prayer Group, Disability Awareness Week, Arbor Week, Celebration of Gifts and Talents Assemblies and Junior Choir.
