Student Management

Middle School teachers have the responsibility of encouraging students to comply with Covenant College rules, which include completing tasks to the best of their ability, wearing uniform appropriately, caring for resources and displaying well-mannered and courteous behaviour.

Discipline measures are two fold:

  1. Credit is given for: Work well done, improved achievement, exams, caring for others in the playground or classroom, assistance given to teachers and other students, in addition to other demonstrations of Christian behaviour, rewarded at the teacher’s discretion.
  2. The other aspect of discipline is the need for clearly defined boundaries within which the student can operate and which acknowledges the rights of all students and teachers to have a safe working environment that allows all participants to learn.

Whenever inappropriate behaviour occurs, students will be disciplined in order to modify their behaviour and love them back on track with Covenant College expectations.
Discipline must be administered with consistency and Christian love for the students, where grace and forgiveness are evident, regardless of the severity of the offence.
Serious offences need to be severely punished and students need to acknowledge that there are real consequences for their actions. As such, the following mode of discipline has been put in place to enable students to recognise actions that are inappropriate and provide boundaries for them to work within.

ORGANISATION DEMERITS
These refer to the student’s lack of organisation in preparedness for lessons, tidiness around the College and compliance with uniform standards. Demerits are recorded in the student’s diary and on a class list, kept by the teacher.

BEHAVIOURAL DETENTION MARKS
These are given without warning, as they represent a direct infringement of the College standard of behaviour.

HOMEWORK DETENTIONS
When Homework is not completed and no explanatory note signed by parents given, a warning note is written in the student’s diary and a deadline time for completion given. Continuing failure to complete homework will mean that the student must participate in a lunchtime Homework detention.

MAJOR OFFENCES
Students are given a full detention to be held during lunchtime on set days.
Please Note: All demerits, detention marks and detentions will be noted in student’s diary.
3 demerits - lunch time detention.
6 demerits in one week - contact parents and external suspension
9 demerits in the Term - one week of lunchtime detention
12 demerits during the Term - 2 day internal suspension and noted on School End of Term Report.

All students and parents sign a Work Place Agreement detailing class: rules, credit/demerit program and consequences of demerits at the beginning of the school year.
