Years 9 & 10

YEAR nine PROGRAM

Overview

Year Nine is a time of critical decision making, when world views are shaped and life choices are cemented -when young people are seeking to establish their own identity. We believe this journey of self discovery is strengthened by a deeper understanding of serving others, of looking outside oneself, of learning from elders and members of the community and, most importantly in establishing an intimate and dynamic relationship with their Creator.

The Year Nine program is designed to see students:

  • grow towards wholeness;
  • be established in their identity in Christ;
  • having robust inquiring minds;
  • engaged in their worlds;
  • contribute to their local communities,
  • serving others,
  • learning independently and cooperatively.

Through Covenant College’s Year Nine program, we want to see students with an earnest regard for the truth and to be those who are critical thinkers, able to challenge the world’s imposition of worldviews, who value goodness, excellence, courage, beauty, integrity, justice and love and students who are learning to be salt and light in their community.

The Cornerstones of the Year Nine program are:

  • Servanthood (Philippians 2:1-11)
  • Discipleship (John 15:8, Matthew 28:19)
  • Character of Christ (Ephesians 5:1)
  • Leadership (John 10:1-21, Ephesians 5:1)
  • Excellence (Colossians 3:23)

Course Structure

Students take on a variety of integrated studies to develop their knowledge and skills. Students are encouraged to take knowledge further, to discover how this new found knowledge, as well as skills, can be used in a positive way for the Kingdom both now and in their future direction in life. There is a separate Year 9 facility for these studies which enables the students the practice they need in forming a valuable community with staff and peers. All excursions are linked into curriculum and are valuable in the development of character for the students’ spiritual journey.

YEAR TEN PROGRAM

The general Year 10 academic program is based on the following Key Learning Areas (KLA's) with an increased degree of flexibility and interest based study as compared to previous years:

Arts (Graphics, Media, Music, Visual Arts)
Bible
Literature
Health and Physical Education
Mathematics
Science
History
Technology / STEM

The Year Ten program aims to offer students the opportunity to develop a broad set of knowledge, while also allowing them to begin to focus on particular areas of competence and interest. Alongside their time in the classroom, Year 10 students are given opportunities to refine their leadership skills, with the aim of equipping them to approach their Senior Years with a commitment to being servant leaders within the school.

The Year Ten program has been designed to further equip and prepare students for their Senior Years study pathway, either the Victorian Certificate of Education [VCE] or the Victorian Certificate of Education (vocational major). In Year 10, students  can begin undertaking one VCE subject or they can also begin to engage in Vocational Education and Training [VET]
