Years Nine and Ten

Overview

Year Nine is a period when many young people seem to lose their way. It can be a time of social, emotional and physiological upheaval. It is a time of critical decision making, when world views are shaped and life choices are cemented: when young people are seeking to establish their own identity. We believe this journey of self discovery is strengthened by a deeper understanding of serving others, of looking outside oneself, of learning from elders and members of the community and, most importantly in establishing an intimate and dynamic relationship with their Creator. The Year Nine program is designed to see students grow towards wholeness; established in their identity in Christ; with robust inquiring minds; who are engaged in their worlds; contributing to their local communities, serving others, learning independently and cooperatively.

Through Covenant College’s Year Nive program, we want to see students with an earnest regard for the truth those who are critical thinkers, able to challenge the world’s imposition of worldviews, who value goodness, excellence, courage, beauty, integrity, justice and love and students who are learning to be salt and light in their community.

The Cornerstones of the Year Nine program are:
* Servanthood (Philippians 2:1-11)
* Discipleship (John 15:8, Matthew 28:19)
* Character of Christ (Ephesians 5:1)
* Leadership (John 10:1-21, Ephesians 5:1)
* Excellence (Colossians 3:23)

The student week: on Mondays and Tuesdays the Year Nine students will be part of the normal Covenant College on site program where Science, Technology, Music, LOTE and other subjects will be taught. On Wednesday to Friday the program is run off site at the Norlane Church of Christ. During these four days students will continue with their normal studies - Maths, English, Bible, Sport, PE, the Arts, SOSE and others which will be either taught as stand alone subjects or as part of integrated Depth studies. Short and Long Expeditions, Community projects, Mentoring and Community Service and parent participation all form part of this exciting program aimed at equipping our Year Nine students.

Course Structure
Course content slots into four main themes, i.e. Self, Local, National and Global. Withing these themes, students take on a variety of integrated studies to develop their knowledge and skills. Students are encouraged to take knowledge further, to discover how this new found knowledge, as well as skills can be used in a positive way for the Kingdom both now and in their future direction in life. There is a separate Year 9 campus for these studies which enables the students the practice they need in forming a valuable community with staff and peers. All excursions are linked into curriculum and are valuable in the development of character for the students’ spiritual journey.

YEAR TEN PROGRAM
The Year Ten program has been designed to further equip and prepare students for their Victorian Certificate of Education [VCE]. All students in Year 10 are expected to complete a Year Eleven VCE subject. This can be in the form of a school based subject from a selected range - Hort. Ag., Health & Human Development, Outdoor Education, Food or Design Technology, an Australian School based Apprenticeship [ASbA] or a Vocational Education and Training [VET] subject. Both ASbA and VET are recognized VCE subjects and go towards their Enter score at the end of Year 12. The remainder of the Year 10 program is based on Key Learning Areas (KLA) The CSF II is a Victorian Government Directive for schools, which describes what students should know and be able to do in the 8 key learning areas (KLA).
